Description
Male to female sex change surgery in Thailand is a life changing surgery that can alter the physical appearance of a man who wants to live out their lives as a woman. Breast reduction surgery, adam’s apple shaving, chin shaving and bone contouring, rhinoplasty, a brow lift, cheek augmentation and a voice change are performed to recreate the patient as a woman.
What is the length of the surgery?
The surgery can take approximately 4 – 8 hours to complete.
Who is a candidate for sex change surgery?
A healthy individual above the age of 20 who feels that they require a sex change and who matches three other criteria, namely having undergone psychiatric counseling for the past year, having undergone hormone therapy as well as living as a woman for the past year. Once it is ascertained that the patient is absolutely certain about the gender change then the process if followed through.
How is the surgery performed?
The surgeon makes an incision between the urethra and the rectum and then cuts away some of the muscles of the pelvic floor to create a neo vagina. During the next step the surgeon makes an incision to split the penis so that the urethra can be separated and repositioned at the new vaginal opening. The scrotal skin is cut and separated from the testicles, which are removed. The scrotal skin is then fashioned to create female genitalia including the Labia Majora and Labia Minora, which will incorporate skin taken from the glans. The surgeon then performs a Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty, meaning that the penis is inverted and used to create a vagina, usually to a depth of 6 or 7 inches. In the case of a relatively short penis, the surgeon will lengthen the vagina using scrotal skin. A clitoris is then created using a small section of glans penis, which is positioned correctly above the urethra.
What can a patient expect from male to female surgery in Thailand?
The patient can expect to have a vulva, vagina and labia major and labia minora that is not only aesthetically realistic but is capable of orgasm. They can expect to find that the urethra has been properly shortened and correctly placed to ensure a downwards flow of urine. All erectile tissue will be removed to avoid narrowing of the introitus and the protrusion of the urethra during sexual arousal. They will also have adequate vaginal depth and a minimization of visible scars.
What are the risks and side effects involved in male to female surgery in Thailand?
Some of the risks involved in this type of surgery include bleeding, bruising, a risk of infection, necrosis, recto-vaginal fistula, intra vaginal hair growth, wound healing problems and hypertrophic scarring.
How long does the patient need to stay in hospital?
The patient can expect to remain in hospital under close supervision for 14 days after the surgery.
Are there any noticeable scars?
Initially there will be noticeable scarring with red spots, but these will fade in due course.
What type of anaesthesia is used?
Patients can opt for a general anaesthetic or an epidural.
