Description

To enhance the appearance of the upper eyelid, the surgeon removes excess skin, fat and even muscle from the upper eyelid.  The procedure can create a crease or fold in the eyelid, called a double eyelid and can even improve vision.  Tired looking eyes are rejuvenated and the procedure can alter the shape of the eyelid, giving it a more pleasing aspect.

The procedure can take anywhere between 1 – 3 hours.

Who is a candidate for upper eyelid surgery?

This procedure is recommended for anyone with drooping or wrinkled upper eyelids or who are dissatisfied with the shape of their eyelids.  This is also a procedure preferred by those wanting double eyelids.

How is the upper eyelid surgery performed?

Incisions are made along the creases of the upper eyelids.  The surgeon will separate the skin from the fatty tissue and muscle underneath before he trims away the excess fatty tissue and muscles, tightening the skin and trimming away any excess.  The incisions are sewn with very fine sutures.

What does a patient expect from upper eyelid surgery in Thailand?

The patient can expect to have a more youthful appearance with more youthful eyes and heightened clarity of vision.

What are the risks and side effects involved in upper eyelid surgery?

Once the anaesthesia wears off the patient will feel pain in the upper eyelid area.  They should apply an ice pack to the eyes for the first twenty four hours whilst lying down with the head in an elevated position.  The patient can experience bruising and swelling as well as hemorrhaging for the first two weeks, where after the symptoms will gradually improve.

How long does the patient need to stay in hospital?

This outpatient procedure does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Are there any noticeable scars?

Initially the patient can expect some pale pink scars but they will be barely visible in the crease of the eye and after six months they should fade to be almost invisible.

How to prepare for upper eyelid surgery?

Patients should refrain from smoking cigarettes or from drinking alcohol two weeks prior to the surgery.  They should also stop any medications or vitamins that they may have been taking.  They should inform the surgeon if they have any allergies.

How long will it take to heal?

After a period of 2 – 3 days patients can start watching television again, however 3 – 5 days activity should be kept to a minimum any forms of strenuous activities should be avoided for three weeks after surgery.

Are the changes made by upper eyelid surgery permanent?

The effects of upper eyelid surgery last for anywhere from 5 – 7 years, but then the process needs to be repeated as the surgery cannot stop the visible signs of ageing permanently.
